Hi guys, I thought, come on live again today. Because I just wanted to share with you an experience that I’ve just had which really tested my comfort zone. I hope that it’s valuable for you as well.
So, yesterday there was a message that went out over Facebook by a lady called Simone de Vos, who is one of the regional directors of BNI Business Network international, looking for a credential disc practitioner who could talk on her radio station this morning.
So typically, I get Jo Douglas from I Now Choose Life Coach to do this and to do all our disc profiling for our trainees who come on to our program. And also she does all the team profiles as well.
Now she doesn’t, for a couple of reasons, one is that she’s better than I am.
We’ve both got the same qualifications. We’re both trained in the same places.
But based on her energy profile she’s a high eye. And for those that know this profile so she’s very extroverted, loves a crowd, loves networking, loves being around people; where I’m not. I’m a CS energy technician base as most traders are, lights theater and very much introverted. So she’s perfect at doing that disk profiles.
So, first of all, I thought, “okay great. I’ll get Jo, to do the radio show, she’d love it she loves that side of things”. Unfortunately, she wasn’t available.
Now, normally I would have just left it and thought, “Oh Okay that’s when, we won’t bother.”
Breaking out of that comfort zone
But for some reason, and I still don’t know why I put my hand up. I sent a message saying, “yes I’m qualified, and if you still need someone I’m happy to do it.”
And I got a message straight back saying yes you’re on at 9:45. So my first thought was, “oh shit! What am I gonna do now? how do I get out of this? I can’t go and call up in the corner and forget about it.”
And as a CS energy, very much on look for predictability. I like detail, and I like order, and I’d like to know the steps so that I can plan things out. Simone is at the eddy, I got another nothing.
I got told, “Okay, we’re going to do a radio show about networking and how knowing people’s profiles and behavior can help with networking”. That was it.
No opportunity to get ready
So I had no opportunity to plan, I had no opportunity to get things right. And all I could do was rely on the experience. I had to rely on my qualifications, rely on my training, and just go in and enjoy the session.
So that’s what I did this morning inside an online radio station for business. And we spent about 45 minutes talking about behavioral profiles.
How we can use them in a networking situation. How it helps with businesses with teams. And how knowing your own profile can help you.
We are very fixed around staying in our comfort zone
Now, the reason why I’m sharing this with you is that, I like anyone else, we are very fixed around staying in our comfort zones.
Being in an area that we feel comfortable with, that it’s safe, that it doesn’t push us, push our boundaries or, or potentially create an environment where we’re scared.
Now, this is based on human behavior.
We need to learn about our break state, and be able to get outside our comfort zones
As humans our psyche, our pain is around, “okay, we need to be aware that if there’s going to be a time that we’re not safe that is danger.”
We can then either fight or flight, we can run away.
And although now in the current day, we’re not going to get attacked by a saber toothed tiger, we still got those, that fight or flight tendencies built into us.
So we need to be able to break out of that. We need to learn about our break state, and be able to get outside our comfort zones.
Knowing that basically yes we’re doing something that we’re not, is not comfortable to us. That we’re not used to, that we’re a bit scared about.
But 9 times out of 10, we’re not going to die from it, unless you’re doing something really risky.
For me, going on a radio show. What’s the worst that can happen? Yes, I can make a stuff up with it, but I’m not gonna die.
Doing something for the first time is always uncomfortable
Now, the thing is with anything. The first time we do it, it’s always going to feel clunky we’re always going to feel really uncomfortable. And we’re not going to do potentially the best job at it. But only by doing and sort of getting better at these things can we actually improve.
Same as like for now on video, I’m not the best person doing Facebook Lives. But the only way I’m going to get better is by doing them. Practicing and getting used to it. And this is the same with anything you do in your business.
Work outside of your comfort zone
The things that you don’t feel comfortable about, you typically are going to forget about them. You’re going to focus on the things that you do like doing such as being on the tools.
We need to get you outside your comfort zone and working on the areas that are actually going to give you the best benefits for your business.
Being on the tools is not one of those. Doing sales, doing the networking events, being outgoing which for a lot of traders is a hard one because they, most of you are introverted, the same as me.
So going and doing networking events and going mingling with other business owners, talking to other business owners, it’s not something that we feel particularly comfortable about.
But it’s the only way that we’re going to grow as business owners. It’s the only way we’re going to be able to get more and more comfortable with that, so that we can expand our comfort zone.
And so those things that currently are outside our comfort zone that we do once or twice. The more we do them, we then you feel more comfortable with those and we grow our comfort zone and then compass those things that were once outside our comfort zone, and scary now become less scary, and something we can do more of. And it’s the same with everything.
The more we can do things, the more we can sort of identify things that we’re not comfortable with and say yes and do them in a way, and not be too worried about stuffing them up.
At the end of the day, most people don’t care, they’re not really that bothered.
We’re all human
So, as human beings we make mistakes we don’t get it right all the time. And what we tend to do as individuals is that we beat ourselves up about it. Where most of the people either don’t know this or they know what you’re going through and not expecting you to get it right.
And so, that’s the lesson for today. So if you get the opportunity to do something that’s outside your normal comfort zone, outside what you would do on a day to day basis, and you work out that this is something that can help you and your business to grow, why don’t you give it a go?
Try and do it in an environment that’s safe and so, I suggest like if it’s for instance, you want to do videos, do it in a close group do it with a few people that you know that can, are going to be there to support you.
They’re not going to be harsh critics at you and just have a go. Get used to being uncomfortable.
And the more you do that, the more comfortable they’ll be and it will be inside your comfort zone and you’re going to learn, grow, and your business is going to grow as well.
So that’s it for today guys, have a great evening! And look forward to talking to you in the next video.
