Over the last few weeks, I’ve been having a lot of conversations with clients and tradies looking to hire more tradies. At the moment, everyone is really busy and struggling to get the work done and most of my clients are looking to hire more tradies to help grow their businesses.
Looking To Hire More Tradies Alternatives
The biggest challenge at the moment is there’s just not the qualified tradies out there. So we have to look at alternatives. When we’re thinking about recruitment and the work we are doing, there’s a few things we can do.
Start thinking about do we need qualified and skilled tradesmen for all components of work we do?
Can we look at labourers?
Can we look at apprentices?
Are there ways that we can split some of the jobs up so that the skilled trades that you’ve got or yourself, (if you’re on your own).
What are the bits that you have to do, and what are the components that you can pass on.
Short term fixes instead of looking to hire more tradies
This includes admin work as well. If it’s just you as a qualified trade, you might have to forego some of those admin tasks, outsource those, give those activities to someone else, so that you can focus more on the technical aspects of your business that you need.
Again, this is just a short term fix and obviously ideally further down the track we’re going to have bigger opportunities for staff. Now, with that, still continue to advertise for the staff you need. Keep posting on your social media, use the job recruitment sites, keep talking to friends and family as well, because you never know where potential new staff members might come from. Now, there’s one caveat with this. If people are out looking for work, it means one of two things.
Either they’re not good at what they do and they are causing issues in their current workplace
or their current employer, their current business owner isn’t looking after them.
Throwing money to hire more tradies isn’t necessarily the answer
Be very wary about throwing money at this solution, offering to pay them a lot more money than they currently getting. This will tend to attract those people that will jump from job to job. And if you’re trying to grow your business, we want to have people that are with you for the long term. If they’re just gonna be move from one place to another because someone offers them more money, that’s disruptive for your business.
Look at the activities you do, and also start to look at who are the people that are out there looking for work or looking to change, what are their reasons? make sure that the people you’re talking to are a values match for you and make sure as part of your interview guide you’ve got those questions that help to understand what their values are and their intentions and what type of people they are.
Hopefully that’s been useful for you. Hang in there, guys I know it’s really busy at the moment, everyone’s flat out, but look at other ways, think outside the square of how you can fix some of these challenges that you’re having, we can’t change the current situation, we just have to change our thinking about it.
